Factor Analysis and Validity in Social Sciences: Application of Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analyses

When do you use exploratory versus confirmatory factor analysis, and how is validity demonstrated?

The most common stumbling block in scale development and adaptation is deciding which factor analysis serves which purpose. The paper treats exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis not as alternatives but as consecutive stages, and works through how construct validity is established across the two. Convergent and discriminant validity, item-removal criteria, and reporting order are covered with worked application.

EFA discovers a structure; CFA tests it. Running both on the same sample is not evidence of validity.
